Temperance River
So-named because it has no (sand) bar at the mouth where it enters Lake Superior. Often said to be the only river on Lake Superior without a bar at the mouth although there are several rivers with this feature. The Ojibwa name is Kawimbash which means "deep hollow river" and is a more fitting name because in its lower reaches the river has cut a deep gorge in the igneous bedrock which resulted when numerous potholes scoured by the river later became connected.
