Floating marsh around a pond

A floating marsh composed largely of Fen Sedge (Carex lasiocarpa) around a pond. This marsh grades into a shore fen and eventually into mixed conifer swamp. The total area is about 20 acres (8.1 hectares). A small stream which originates in the mixed conifer swamp flows into the marsh from the northeast. The marsh is drained by a convoluted boggy stream that eventually connects with the Poplar River.

It is a lovely North American scene and Gary, your description went a long way to help understand what we are seeing. Anyone notice that the longer you look at the image, the more the fen sedge appears to be floating thanks to the sky's reflection?! That's a really neat visual effect. Posted 6 years ago

  Thank you, Ruth. I wandered into the marsh last summer from the northeast following that small stream. I couldn't get too far before the sedge mat became unstable. To get a better sky reflection in the water I kept tipping my cellphone until I saw the blue-gray reflection in the water which actually looks more like weak coffee in color. Posted 6 years ago
