
Horsetail Kelp (Laminaria digitata) on Blue Mussel (Mytilus edulis)
The holdfast of the kelp has root-like protrusions called rhizoids. This is how the kelp attaches itself to rocks, and in this case the shell of a blue mussel.
Habitat: Washed up on the beach during low tide

"Laminaria digitata" is a large brown alga in the family Laminariaceae, also known by the common name Oarweed. It is found in the sublittoral zone of the northern Atlantic Ocean.
