  1. This is a bit of an odd species, one of only 2 species in its genus (the other is endemic to another Micronesian islands, quite a bit harder to get to, and I unfortunately didn't get to see it...). Posted 6 years ago
    1. It definitely looks odd and it seems quite a specialist in one particular way of hunting. What a cool adaptation! Posted 6 years ago
      1. Indeed! I was lucky to encounter a family group of 4 birds, who posed for me quite nicely. It was extra nice as I saw all 3 species of white-eyes that occur on the island within 5 minutes and 20 meters of each other! Posted 6 years ago

The long-billed white-eye is a species of bird in the Zosteropidae family. It is endemic to the island of Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia.

Its natural habitats are subtropical and tropical moist forests, and plantations. It is threatened by habitat loss.

It has a curious nuthatch-like behavior of creeping along large tree limbs, and seems particularly specialized in using its long, slightly decurved bill to extract arthropods from the severed ends of branches.
