  1. One of my favorite endemics of the trip, for obvious reasons! Since Micronesia encompasses islands that span over 2500 km from East to West, each of the main island groups has species that are the result of a sort of biogeographical roulette, having been colonized by birds that came from different places. Some islands have kingfishers, other don't, some have megapodes, some have owls, and Pohnpei has the only lorikeet! (Though apparently it used to range more widely...) Posted 2 months ago

The Pohnpei lorikeet , known as serehd in Pohnpeian, is a species of parrot in the family Psittaculidae. It is endemic to the island of Pohnpei and the nearby Ahnd Atoll in Micronesia. Historically the species also occurred on Namoluk Atoll near Chuuk, and the species may once have had a wider distribution throughout Micronesia than it does today.
