  1. Like large pigeons in a lot of places, this species has suffered seriously from hunting, and is usually really shy. But on Pohnpei, they are surprisingly abundant, even near the capital (though of course capital might be a misleading term, since its population is about 6000 people...). I mostly saw them in flight, but I had this one nice encounter with a bird that I found perched near the path, with a convenient window of visibility through the leaves. He peered at me dubiously but didn't take off, so I got a couple of decent shots :) Posted 6 years ago

The Micronesian imperial pigeon , also known as the Micronesian pigeon, is a species of bird in the family Columbidae . It is found in Palau, the Caroline Islands, the Marshall Islands and Nauru. Its habitats include montane forests, secondary forests, forests on beaches, and mangroves. It is threatened by hunting and deforestation, and the IUCN has assessed it as a near-threatened species.
