Turtle Beetle (Chelonarium lecontei) I had no idea what this was when I first saw it! Such a strange critter. It tucked its head under itself (like a turtle) whenever I approached it! From what I&#039;m reading, this is a fairly rare beetle in North America.<br />

    1. Yes! I had never heard of such a thing either! It was a curious little fellow.

      If I spot another one, I think I'm going to try to get a video of this behavior!

  2. An awesome find and image. Reminds me of when I found a weevil once - although I couldn't identify it as a weevil - a 'face' like none I'd ever seen before. Finally an entomologist in a Facebook page informed me it was indeed a weevil that had this ability to pull its snout and face down toward it's body, even had a special groove for the snout to fit in to.
