Modest Sphinx - Pachysphinx modesta
I experienced moth mania last night with my blacklight. There were so many moths that I had to cover my face so they didn't fly up my nose.
This moth has a ridiculous common name as it is far from modest. It was the biggest moth I've ever seen and I'm surprised to say that I was actually a bit afraid of it, haha. It flew around erratically and I may have squealed with fear a few times. Of course, the moth is harmless, but man it was HUGE! Sadly, when it was flying around like a maniac, it was perched way up high beyond reach. So, this is the best shot I could get.
Wingspan: ~12 cm. FW had a median band surrounding a small, white reniform spot. Scalloped outer margin. HW had a blue tint and a streak of red. Hosts: Polar, aspen, cottonwood, and willow. I suspect that, in my area, cottonwood is the main host.
Habitat: Attracted to a blacklight in a semi-rural area
''Pachysphinx modesta'', the modest sphinx or poplar sphinx, is a moth of the family Sphingidae. The species was first described by Thaddeus William Harris in 1839.

I think I'm going to wear my netted bug hats to prevent ear/nose/mouth invasions this summer?
And the shot is still great! Posted 6 years ago
