  2. Fantastic! Any story behind this one? Did it take a long time to find? Posted 6 years ago
    1. Haha Ferdy knows what's up! This is indeed one of the island's trickier endemics.
So this is one of the most famous birding spots in Taiwan, a road that goes from 300 to 2600 masl, crossing all the forest types, where most of the endemic birds can be seen.
This was not a proper birding trip, since I was with my family, but I'd set aside a full day to go up this mountain road. Unfortunately, the day I'd said aside turned out to be the date they chose for the annual bird race! So every birder on the island was competing there, and I couldn't get a guide, and had to just hire a taxi for the day.
Anyway, this was one of the first stops where I got out. One team of birders was there, scanning the undergrowth, but nothing seemed to be around, so I walked up the road a bit, seeing my first yuhinas and liocichlas. But then I turned around just at the right moment to see them waving at me, so I rushed back down, and indeed the partridge was just passing by, a few meters away, completely unperturbed! There were a couple of other species I saw thanks to other birders, but this was the highlight.

      1. Great story! With any ground dwelling bird I'm thinking there must be a case of perseverance or luck involved, or both :) Posted 6 years ago
        1. Haha yup! Do you know that on my second visit to Colombia, before I became a crazy birder, I ran across a covey of chestnut wood-quail on a trail while looking for orchids (the one crappy photo I got is on JD). I didn't even know what they were at the time! But on both of my recent visits, I've heard them many times, but never managed to catch so much as a glimpse... Posted 6 years ago
          1. I know how that feels for sure! I'm generally ill-prepared, fully embracing my ignorance to discover rare gems on the spot, or only realize it later when back home :) Posted 6 years ago
            1. I wouldn't know about your preparation, but you seem to have an exceptional eye once you are in the field, considering the number and range of species that you find! Posted 6 years ago
