Red Maple Samaras - Acer rubrum The seeds of a red maple tree have wings and are called samaras. They are a dispersal mechanism that helps the seeds get farther from the tree. Children also help disperse them by sticking the seeds to their noses :).<br />

  1. Can't remember sticking them to my nose, but certainly used to call them 'helicopters'! Now I have learned the botanical name for these, thank you. And a superb shot, your photography is truly exceptional. Posted 6 years ago

"Acer rubrum", is one of the most common and widespread deciduous trees of eastern North America. The red maple ranges from the Lake of the Woods on the border between Ontario and Minnesota, east to Newfoundland, south to near Miami, Florida, and southwest to east Texas.
