  1. The highlight of my weekend, during a long birding roadtrip through Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma!
This is probably the most endangered of all North American woodpeckers (unless of course, the Ivory-billed survives in some southern swamp), seen here at the norwestern-most part of its current range. It is a specialist of southern pine savannas, and much of its habitat has been lost, and much of what is left is fragmented. Still, there have been great efforts to save the species, and populations will hopefully increase in the future

  4. Thanks! I bird mostly by eye, but for a juicy target like this, I'd made the effort to learn its voice the night before. And indeed when I got there, it was quite overwhelming, completely surrounded as I was by pine trees. And there were plenty of birds around, but not a trace of woodpeckers. After a good three hours, I was getting a bit discouraged, when I suddenly heard a piercing call coming from one of the few oak trees, and I knew I'd found one before even laying eyes on it! Him and the other 2 in the group were so absorbed in their feeding that I was able to observe them for a good 15 minutes, it was terrific. Posted 6 years ago

The red-cockaded woodpecker is a woodpecker found in southeastern North America. Some taxonomic authorities, including the American Ornithological Society, continue to place this species in the genus ''Picoides''.
