California Flannel Bush This plant is not supposed to be here! It supposedly is at home in high chaparral country of California instead of next to the ocean in BC. It was obviously planted by someone and it has done quite well despite suffering being blown down with the main trunk parallel to the ground. It has taken me two years to identify it because we have never visited the site when it was in bloom. The common name comes from the hairy leaves the hairs of which can be irritating to the skin and eyes. 1. Is it a harmful invasive plant? In any case it's gorgeous, glad you found it in bloom! Posted 6 years ago
    1. Ferdy, thanks for the comment. Invasive... have to say that our area it is not. In it’s natural environment it needs fire for the seeds to germinate. If I wanted to start from seeds I would have to scarify the seeds in hot water then stratify in 10*C moist sand for 12-16 weeks. The photos I have seen of the plant in it’s natural environment don’t seem to indicate that it spreads easily. Also the water requirements of the plant are quite stringent, no watering on the roots in the summer and needs to be close to a water source. Some good info on the plant here, https://calscape.org/Fremontodendron-californicum-(Flannel-Bush) It is a spectacular plant when in bloom. I believe that on this island there are only two of these plants and both have been planted by the same person. Posted 6 years ago
  2. How fascinating that it's done so well there! Posted 6 years ago
    1. Christine, yes, it is fascinating it’s done so well. Everything that I have read about the plant indicates it shouldn’t survive here when in truth both plants attained the height of 8 or 9 meters. It is quite an impressive plant particularly when in bloom. Gary Posted 6 years ago
      1. Amazing! It will be interesting to see how long it thrives for. Posted 6 years ago
        1. I believe that this plant has been growing for at least 30 years. The main trunk is 12-15cm in diameter. It is a beauty! Posted 6 years ago
