Pond Edge There are several things going on in this photo.

1.Black dots with circles around them. A lot of people mistake these for frog eggs, but they are just bubbles. As the shallow parts of the pond heat up in the spring, algae grow and bacteria decompose organic matter. These activities can produce bubbles.

2. Tiny sand tubes. These are made by aquatic insects, possibly tube-making caddisflies (Psychomyiidae).
3. Snail - probably enjoying slurping up the muck
1. Fascinating and highly enjoyable to see - so much intrigue if one can be bothered to look and learn! Posted 6 years ago
    1. Thanks, Ruth. It's not the prettiest spot to observe, so I can see why people overlook such spots. But, they are missing out because there is always something to see for those who take the time to look :). Posted 6 years ago

      1. That is a brilliant term, very creative! Let's remember it, I'm thinking it could become useful as a list or something else. Posted 6 years ago
        1. Thanks, but I didn't come up with the term. I don't know where it came from though. Good idea about possible use for a list or something in the future... Posted 6 years ago
