Coral Spot - Nectria cinnabarina
Nectria cinnabarina produces red pads (fruiting bodies) on the bark of hardwood trees. These pads release large volumes of spores that land on nearby branches, allowing the pathogen to establish itself in new locations. Once established, the fungus is very difficult to eradicate. It kills the bark, cambium, and outer sapwood as it obtains sugars from the host.
Habitat: Mostly hardwood forest...On a hardwood tree. Nectria cinnabarina attacks over 90 different genera of woody plants!

"Nectria cinnabarina" is a plant pathogen that causes cankers on many tree species and also a disease known as coral spot. A study published in 2011 showed that this species is actually a complex consisting of at least 4 distinct species.
