''Empis tessellata'' is a large species of dance fly, in the fly family Empididae. In the United Kingdom, Adults can be seen from April to August, particularly on the folwers of umbellifers. At about 8.5–12 millimetres , it is the largest British ''Empis'' species, thought there are other similar sized species in mainland Europe.
