A Female Spotted Towhee. She is looking a little bedraggled from tending her young. The male Spotted Towhee has dark black feathers, the white spots are more prominent and the orange “flanks” are brighter as well. The brilliant red eye remains the same! The spotted towhee is a large New World sparrow. The taxonomy of the towhees has been debated in recent decades, and formerly this bird and the eastern towhee were considered a single species, the rufous-sided towhee.
