Lichtensia viburni - adult male in test no tail Not quite sure what's going on here ... the male in the test has clearly emerged from the pupa (fully developed wings visible), but there are no tail appendages sticking out (yet?). Might be that these will only start growing now and that the male will not emerge until these are fully done (I've seen tests with shorter and longer appendages sticking out), or maybe the thin waxy wires have already been pulled or rubbed off somehow (?!?) The Viburnum Cushion Scale (Lichtensia viburni) is a soft scale insect (Coccidae), originally described from Viburnum but quite polyphageous and known as a pest of olive groves in the Mediterranean region.
