Bark Beetle Gallery (Curculionidae- Scolytus sp.)
This beetle gallery kind of resembles a centipede. It has a central, linear, vertical tunnel that is parallel to the grain of the wood that was excavated by a female bark beetle. On both sides of this tunnel, she chewed egg niches, laying one egg in each. When the eggs hatch, each larva feeds by continuing its own tunnel away from its mother's. The larvae eventually pupate and chew their way out of the bark as adults.
Habitat: Dead wood in a mostly hardwood forest
