Bloodroot - Sanguinaria canadensis A fragile spring flower that opens in full sunlight and then closes at night. The blood-red root was traditionally used as a dye in addition to many medicinal uses. But, it has toxic properties and is not recommended to be ingested.<br />

I think it&#039;s interesting that it opens in full sun (and it was a very sunny day), but the woods were soooo dark and it was only receiving dappled light.<br />

"Sanguinaria canadensis" is a perennial, herbaceous flowering plant native to eastern North America. It is the only species in the genus "Sanguinaria", included in the family Papaveraceae, and most closely related to "Eomecon" of eastern Asia.
