Espeletia pycnophylla, Asteraceae
Espeletia pycnophylla is a plant that inhabits the high altitude páramo ecosystem. This was at 3,680 m elevation. The plant is very slow growing and forms a thick trunk with succulent hairy leaves in a dense spiral pattern. Its macrescent leaves help protect the plants from the cold.
