Small Black Dung Beetle - Copris minutus TL: ~1 cm. Shiny black head with horn; pronotum with prominence; elytra distinctly grooved with deep punctures

Habitat: Attracted to a light at night

**This beetle either had a fungal infection or was covered in dried poop? It was very active though and would play dead whenever I poked it.
1. Perfection! <3 And it does look more like an infection, hmmm Posted 8 days ago
1. I'm leaning towards it just being dried poop/mud though? It's in weird spots, like on the leg and head. I would think that if it was fungal, that the beetle would be in seriously bad shape by the time it grew through the elytra and became so systemic. Unless it was just growing externally? 1. Given its typical "activities", poop/mud sounds likely to me too. Posted 8 days ago
1. Yep, and it crawled all over my hand and up my arm. Posted 8 days ago
1. Ah well. People buy bags of shit to garden and generously stir their hands in it :) Posted 8 days ago
1. And, my cats rest their bare, crusty anuses all over my furniture. Posted 7 days ago

1. Exactly. One of my cats has long fur and she gets dingleberries, which I have to pull off. Sometimes, I miss them and then find them around the house. We shave her butt to prevent this problem though. Posted 7 days ago
1. Oh my I know exactly what you mean but still don't want to think about it :) Posted 7 days ago
1. The intricacies of having pets...Or, dung beetles. Posted 7 days ago
2. Good that I read the description, was totally thinking it's part of the species. Great find! Posted 8 days ago
1. When I first found it, I assumed the pattern was normal for the species. It wasn't until I uploaded the pics that I realized otherwise. I saw another one of these beetles last night - it didn't have any debris stuck to it, but it did have phoretic mites! Posted 8 days ago
