  2. Claire, I had identified the following shot as a Purple Starling...

Rüppells Starling full body view in Central Serengeti All purple metallic in all its glory. Africa,Lamprotornis purpuroptera,Rüppells Starling,Serengeti Central,Serengeti National Park,Serengeti area,Tanzania

...after seeing this shot though, I'm in doubt. They seem like different species, likely I misidentified it. What do you think?

  3. Think you are right Ferdy, lighter eyes and a long tail. As far as I can tell yours is a long-tailed starling (Lamprotornis caudatus). Otherwise it could be a Ruppell's starling (Lamprotornis purpuroterus), looking at the banding on the tail I think this is more probable. Do you have more photos?
    Beautiful bird and great capture!

  4. Sorry but I don't think the main heading photo is a Purple Glossy Starling. Purple Glossy have a very prominent yellow eye, are more thick-set and are rarely found in South Africa. I think this may possibly be a Black-bellied Starling Posted 10 years ago
    1. You are absolutely right Ant, thanks for pointing this out, I shall amend it. Posted 10 years ago
      1. Which means a new species intro :) Posted 10 years ago
        1. Hmm, should have let Ant do it. Posted 10 years ago
          1. That wouldn't have mattered in this case, as species intros are awarded to the photographer of the first photo, irregardless of who actually identifies it. Posted 10 years ago
          2. I wouldn't have wanted any karma points from this it's your photo, mistakes happen simple as that. Posted 10 years ago, modified 10 years ago
            1. Thanks Ant. Posted 10 years ago
