Hormuzakia negevensis is an exceptionally rare plant that is endemic to Israel. It's an herbaceous perennial that grows up to 50 cm in height and has violet-blue flowers that bloom in early spring. There is not much information about it online, and it was unknown to science until 1994. In the wild, it's only found growing on a very small ridge in the Negev. Circumstances for this beautiful species are dire. Listed on the Israeli Red List, Hormuzakia negevensis is under serious danger of extinction as only a few dozen plants remain. Let that sink in—only a few dozen remain in total! Scientists have been working for the past several years on trying to establish new populations of Hormuzakia negevensis in an effort to maintain genetic diversity and save the species from extinction. Let's hope their efforts are a success! {Spotted in Israel by JungleDragon moderator, Ori Fragman-Sapir} #JungleDragon Posted 6 years ago
