Corydalus armatus, La Planada Nature Reserve, Colombia We were opening our first moth night at La Planada Nature Reserve when this enormous insect came flying erratically towards the light. We had never seen anything like it, and it totally freaked us out, even more so when having a closer look at it.

This is a dobsonfly. Males have enormous mandibles, which are in fact too large, they can't be used for anything other than sexual selection. They look hellish, therefore they name their children hellgrammites.

So although they send even the toughest machete farmer running, they are completely harmless to people. They are part of the fascinating insect order megaloptera:
1. Lol, your description is hilarious! We get dobsonflies frequently here - they tend to hang out on our window screens during the day. My younger son is really scared of them...kind of like you seem to be... Posted 6 years ago
    1. Yes, but are the ones you see also 20cm? I mean I need something to justify my fear :)
Large clumsy flyers do freak me out, same with the large beetles and cockroaches.

      1. Really?! 20 cm!!! Please say you're joking? I doubt that I've ever seen a dobsonfly larger than 8 cm-ish. That would even freak me out. I can't stand being bopped by large, clumsy night-fliers. They are ridiculous. Posted 6 years ago
        1. Yes, really. Phew, I found a good excuse. Posted 6 years ago
