Heterodermia speciosa on an old Yellow Birch (Betula allegheniensis) in a conifer swamp. There was just one lichen growing about a half meter above the ground on the north side of the tree.

Gray color; fibrous cortex; soralia on tips of dissected margins; medulla K+ yellow, persistent; undersurface pale, corticate almost to the tips; compare with H. obscurata, golden yellow underside and H. albicans, K+ red, salazinic acid.
