Andean Ruddy Duck (spp rubida) male, La Cocha, Colombia
The unmistakable male of this species, characterized by its bright blue bill and warm brown feathers. Note the stiff tail, "stiff-tails" is the common name for ducks in this genus. Female and young:
This concludes our 1.5 day visit to La Cocha. To sum it up:
- Some "value" birds (meaning not a lot of them but those you do find are great)
- Our first ever visit to the Páramo eco system, a world in its own
- A great place for orchids, again not in great numbers, but beautiful nevertheless
- Cold, misty conditions, challenging for photography
Regrets: not spending an extra day capturing the amazing Páramo plants, fungi/lichens.
In the afternoon, we descended from this altitude downwards to the town of Pasto, to stay for the night. Next in the set will be La Planada Nature Reserve, a high altitude jungle.

Oxyura jamaicensis rubida is a subspecies of Ruddy Duck (Oxyura jamaicensis) that occurs in South America.
