Here's what the curly 'hairdo' is really for: it is located at the tip of an antenna-like appendage that the frogfish extends and stirs in the water in front of it to attract small fishes. If fast enough it will make a sudden opened mouth motion forward when the fish is distracted by the lure and this way it will catch it. My husband made a video of the stirry lure. I think this frogfish did not get a prey this time. He was a juvenile practicing. I hope he will have catched enough later on to become bigger. He was very close to where the big hairy frogfish -on other pictures posted- was placed so it is likely a son/daughter of this one. Striated Frogfish - Antennarius striatus- Lure on the hunt Rojos I, Lembeh. Here's what the curly 'hairdo' is really for: it is located at the tip of an antenna-like appendage that the frogfish extends and stirs in the water in front of it to attract small fishes.
