Andean Ruddy Duck (spp rubida) youngster, La Cocha, Colombia Taken whilst starting our boat trip on the La Cocha Lagoon. This is the female of the species (the male is highly distinctive because of its bright blue bill) as indicated by the brown feathers and white stripe in the neck. Another characteristic typical for the genus is the stiff tail.

I've created a subspecies in this case as the North American counterpart (Oxyura jamaicensis jamaicensis) is distinct in range. Some still consider the subspecies on this photo (spp. rubida) to be a separate species: Andean duck (Oxyura ferruginea).
