I've never seen this slime mold looking like this before - it looked like it was made up of tiny maggots. Usually, the aethalia are smooth and firm on the outside.

    1. I have no idea. Maybe this is what it looks like when it's still developing? Or, maybe it got too wet and got mushy? I'm going to post on a slime page on FB. Maybe someone there will know. Posted 6 years ago

Lycogala epidendrum is a cosmopolitan species of plasmodial slime mould which is often mistaken for a fungus. The aethalia, or fruiting bodies, occur either scattered or in groups on damp rotten wood, especially on large logs, from June to November.
