It's funny, they look so similar to the Old World buntings (and indeed were put in the same family for a long time), but genetic studies have shown that they are more closely related to New World tanagers and warblers!
I was also very pleased because in winter they form mobile flocks and are mostly seen as black specks flying over fields, but these guys were very cooperative and I got great views from just a few meters away! I also saw my first American horned larks in the same fields, as well as my first American pipits, so I was a very happy birder :) Posted 6 years ago
