  1. A quick interruption from my Panama uploads for this cool little fellow, seen yesterday while I was out birding: my first longspur (though I've seen snow buntings, which are in the same family)!
    It's funny, they look so similar to the Old World buntings (and indeed were put in the same family for a long time), but genetic studies have shown that they are more closely related to New World tanagers and warblers!
    I was also very pleased because in winter they form mobile flocks and are mostly seen as black specks flying over fields, but these guys were very cooperative and I got great views from just a few meters away! I also saw my first American horned larks in the same fields, as well as my first American pipits, so I was a very happy birder :)
