  1. Cotingas are definitely some of the coolest birds of the Neotropics, a diverse family of often very striking birds. A lot of them are also quite tricky to spot as they like to perche quietly at the top of the tallest trees. I failed to find the blue cotinga I was hoping to see while I was in Panama, but seeing these cousins, which travel in loud, very conspicuous bands, and are beautiful in their own right, was a nice compensation (I still really want to see a blue cotinga, though!!). The purple-throated fruitcrow is a species of bird in the family Cotingidae, the cotingas. It is the only species of the genus "Querula". It is native to Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama and most of the northern half of South America.
