Lobaria pulmonaria
Lobaria pulmonaria (Lungwort Lichen) on an ancient Yellow Birch (diameter 32 cm) in a conifer swamp. Located about 1.5 meters above the ground on the north side of the tree. This lichen was first spotted by me in 1972. Other lichens also grow with this one including Heterodermia speciosa, Myelochroa auralenta, and Pyxine sorediata which are considered lichen species with a preference for old trees.
"Lobaria pulmonaria" is a large epiphytic lichen consisting of an ascomycete fungus and a green algal partner living together in a symbiotic relationship with a cyanobacterium—a symbiosis involving members of three kingdoms of organisms.
