Ranunculus gmelinii
Ranunculus gmelinii (Small Yellow water Crowfoot) growing in an old beaver channel in a shrub carr. Water depth is from 1 to 3 feet deep. This particular patch has been known to me since 1992 which shows that despite its delicate appearance it is a long-lived species. These plants are tough in other ways, too. In the winter they can freeze solid in the ice only to begin regrowing once thawed. If the water in which they are growing begins to dry up they can adapt to living on the damp mud. Flowers are yellow with five, sometimes more, tepals and are sweetly scented.
