Acer spicatum
Acer spicatum (Mountain Maple). A frequent understory shrub in moist forests where it can form dense thickets especially after windthrow has brought down much of the canopy layer. This shrub can develop one to several shoots that can reach heights to 25 feet. Flowers are bone on more or less upright panicles, are greenish-yellow with five small lance-linear petals. The bloom period is from June to July well after tree species of maple (sugar, red, and boxelder) have bloomed. Fall leaf color is red, orange, or yellow and can be quite spectacular when there are many bushes.

''Acer spicatum'' is a species of maple native to northeastern North America from Saskatchewan to Newfoundland, and south to Pennsylvania. It also grows at high elevations in the southern Appalachian Mountains to northern Georgia.
