Roadside Hawk, Trampoline of Death, Colombia One of the most accurately named birds in the world, for being reliably found on the roadside, always. This bird helped in other ways. We were stopped by the police for a random search directly after this spotting. Colombia is one of few countries in the world where the regular police is so heavily armed, with machine guns. Noting the size of my camera, they asked lots of questions about it and ultimately wanted proof of my claim that we were only photographing birds. This bird did it, as we had not photographed many on this day.<br />

The story isn&#039;t as interesting as it may sound. They were probably just bored out of their minds and had a genuine interest in our hobby. 1. Lovely shot!

What do you think they thought you could be photographing?

    1. Truthfully, they didn't really come across as suspecting us of anything, but you definitely don't want to have photos of a military basis on the cam. Or of course something narcos or wildlife trade related. I don't think they were expecting that, they were just impressed with the size of the camera :) Posted 6 years ago
      1. I would imagine that your camera definitely turns heads! Posted 6 years ago
        1. For them maybe, for birders not so much, have you ever seen a 600mm f/4? Posted 6 years ago
          1. No, I haven't, but I just looked it up! It weighs 8.62 lb / 3920 g!! Posted 6 years ago
            1. Yes, and they're also giant in size and can basically only be handled using a tripod. Our guide Manuel recently had a group of 7 Chinese tourists who each had such a lens and the tour lasted close to 2 months. Imagine the logistics of that, one tourist basically takes 2 seats :) Posted 6 years ago

The Roadside Hawk is a relatively small bird of prey found in Latin America. This vocal species is often the most common raptor in its range. It has many subspecies and is sometimes placed in the monotypic genus ''Rupornis'' instead of ''Buteo''.
