Rare Shadow Bands: Total Eclipse Phenomenon Shadows of leaves on the ground? Nope! These are actually an example of the extremely rare phenomenon called shadow &ldquo;snakes&rdquo; or bands. There are some theories, but no definitive evidence as to what they are. It may very well be one of science&rsquo;s greatest mysteries! I had done my reading before the trip and was absolutely STOKED that we got to see it when it&rsquo;s so rare. At first i thought it was just leaves too, but to our surprise they started rippling, and there were no trees! <br />
