    1. Just got a confirmation from an invertebrate/arthropod/insect curator! Cicadas seem to be one of his expert areas, so I should probably listen? :D The description of the habitat/range in the wikipedia thing is dead on as well. Posted 6 years ago, modified 6 years ago

"Best known as the "Scissor(s) Grinder" but also referred to as the "Southern Scissor(s) Grinder, N. winnemanna is best known from areas east of the Appalachian Mountains including Atlantic states from PA south to FL(?). Populations of these cicadas seem to occupy the lower mountain elevations, Piedmont Plateau and upper/inner Atlantic Coastal Plain where they frequent deciduous & mixed deciduous-coniferous forests. Populations often approach the bays and estuaries, but are generally absent in maritime.. more
