Tennessee Shiner(Non-breeding individual)-Barren River System, Kentucky I have seen lots of images of this species in spawning color, but have yet to see too many shots of them when they aren't colored up. The spawning fish are gorgeous, but unless you time it right, this is what you are likely to come across in the field. The Tennessee shiner (Notropis leuciodus) is a species of fish in the family Cyprinidae, the carps and minnows. It is native to the southeastern United States.
