White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) Scat
This is a ball of deer poop. You can tell a lot about a deer based on its scat. For example, their poop varies with what they eat and tends to clump like this when they are eating a lot of grass and weeds. In contrast, if it was eating mostly twigs and leaves, its scat wouldn't have clumped as much, but would be individual pellets.
Deer defecate around 12 times a day with bucks producing larger piles. This scat had 3 decent sized piles of clumped pellets. They tend to poop mostly near their bedding and feeding areas - at least you know that you are near one of these locations when you find lots of piles of scat in one small-ish area. There were many piles like this one in the area, so I'm guessing it was near a feeding location as I didn't spot any good areas for them to bed.
