    1. Thanks! It was a really big butterfly! I took hundreds of photos of this fellow until I found this one which the light really illuminates its wings! Funny thing about butterflies... When you're trying to shoot them if they fly away, simply stay still and wait. They will fly away but will come to the same place just afterwards, so no need to chase them, they will come to you! :) Posted 12 years ago
      1. Yes, I use that tip all the time. Strange how they tend to return. Another tip is to try to spot them in the cold. They stay still because they can't fly then :) Posted 12 years ago
        1. Strange... I never catch a butterfly in the cold... Only in spring and summer in plain sunlight, they normally don't go to the shadows... Posted 12 years ago

"Papilio machaon", the Old World swallowtail, is a butterfly of the family Papilionidae. The butterfly is also known as the common yellow swallowtail or simply the swallowtail. It is the type species of the genus "Papilio". This widespread species is found in much of the Palearctic and in North America.
