This looks a bit like Metoeca foedalis that occurs in Australia and Asia!

  That is some excellent detective work! It looks like Metoeca sp. contains only a single species. As you said, largely distributed towards Africa, Asia and Australia but check out this single observation from Ecuador:

The Metoeca

"Metoeca" is a genus of moths of the Crambidae family. It contains only one species "Metoeca foedalis", which has a wide distribution, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, South Africa, China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand and Australia.
