Cordyceps curculionum on weevil, La Isla Escondida, Colombia
Another example of death and beauty in a single scene. This parasitic Cordyceps fungus specializes in weevils. According to my guide, it's a species complex, that's why they are so variable. This one has a straight stem that ends with a beautiful red tip. It always seems to grow out of the gap between the abdomen and thorax. This series has one shot of the discovery, followed by several table-top shots as we took the specimen back to the lodge.
