A Glaucous-winged Gull in Action
Easy meals are hard to come by when the high tides are in the daylight hours so this gull has decided to try and steal his meal. The prospective victim, a Red-breasted merganser, was a little quicker than the gull and had already disappeared below the surface leaving nothing but a splash of seawater!

The glaucous-winged gull is a large, white-headed gull. The genus name is from Latin "Larus" which appears to have referred to a gull or other large seabird. The specific "glaucescens" is New Latin for "glaucous" from the Ancient Greek, "glaukos", denoting the grey color of its wings.
