Periwinkle Party - Littorina littorea I always wonder why periwinkles group together like this. Is it safety in numbers? Competition for space on the best rocks? Or, not enough rocks in the intertidal zone, so they are crowded? Things that me me go &#039;hmm&#039;.<br />

I always wonder why periwinkles group together like this. Is it safety in numbers? Competition for space on the best rocks? Or, not enough rocks in the intertidal zone, so they are crowded? Things that me me go 'hmm'.

    1. I looked it up, but forgot to write back....They tend to crowd on the rocks when the tide is out. There aren't a ton of rocks in this area, so they clump together on whatever space is available. Plus, they eat algae off the rocks. Posted 6 years ago

The common periwinkle or winkle is a species of small edible whelk or sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusc that has gills and an operculum, and is classified within the family Littorinidae, the periwinkles.
