Common Periwinkle - Littorina littorea A common winkle along the Maine coast. I found lots of them along the coast during low tide. It had a blunt spire, pale columella, and was about 25 mm long.<br />

Notes: Periwinkles are vegetarians and can withstand long periods of time without food or water.<br />

Fun Fact: I got it to come out of its shell by humming to it...<br />

The common periwinkle or winkle is a species of small edible whelk or sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusc that has gills and an operculum, and is classified within the family Littorinidae, the periwinkles.
