Rhinotus purpureus Sorting through some old images I stumbled on this weird looking and cutely pink millipede again (strange head shape for a millipede!) that I took in the tropical hothouse Burgers' Bush in Arnhem, Netherlands while looking for woodlice in 2009.
At the time I made no effort to ID it, but I just now realized that this species has probably not been recorded, or at least not published for the Netherlands before(!)
Fauna Europaea lists this species for England only, where it is known from the Tropical Rainforest Biome at Eden Project (2003) and the tropical glasshouses at RHS Wisley Gardens (2015), but according to Decker et al. (2014) it is also known from the hothouse "Palm Garden" in Frankfurt am Main, Germany since 2008.
So here it is, recorded for the Netherlands as well, since 2009 :o) Millipede,Polyzoniida,Rhinotus,Rhinotus purpureus,Siphonotidae Click/tap to enlarge Species introCountry intro

1. Cool! The head is definitely unique. Thanks for sharing! Posted 6 years ago
1. Hi Christine, my pleasure :o) I remember being put off by the strange head when looking for a name at the time. Turns out it's an order and family of millipedes (Polyzoniida: Siphonotidae) that I didn't even know existed (until last night). We never stop learning :o) Posted 6 years ago
2. Another example of the value of older photos! And a very valuable species intro as we have about two dozen millipedes fully ID-ed only :) Posted 6 years ago
1. So, I figured I'd add another order with this one ...
Paraspirobolus lucifugus Just because Ferdy was hinting that we're still missing millipedes :o) ...
This is another new order/family for JD (Spirobolida: Spirobolellidae). These critters look a lot like the Julida we normally have in Europe but they have completely different mouthparts and relatively short legs and antennae. There are no natural living species of this order in Europe, so this one was also found in the tropical hothouse Burgers' Bush in Arnhem (2009) Diplopoda,Paraspirobolus,Paraspirobolus lucifugus,Spirobolellidae,Spirobolida

But to my dismay the order was already well represented thanks to JD being a world wide "institute" :o)
Next I was pleasantly surprised to see that I could easily make up for that by adding these:
8Glomerida
:o)

1. Hah, why introduce a species when you can introduce an entire order :) Posted 6 years ago

''Rhinotus purpureus'' is a species of millipede in the family Siphonotidae. It is native to the Caribbean but is also found in Central America, North America, South America and in some tropical glashouses in Europe and probably elsewhere in the world.
