Steccherinum oreophilum? Growing on a fallen hardwood (?) log near a stream in a forested area in Mentone, Alabama, US. January 1, 2019. Felt spongy (and water-logged).
I initially thought Hericium sp., but when I took a closer look the teeth shape was completely off! Any ideas are much appreciated! THe consensus in the mushroom ID seems to be S. pachydon. I thought this was really strange as I had never seen it in this resupinate form (no pileus)!
1. Someone gave an ID that I thought fit a little better, so I have changed it here. Despite several people saying this might be S. pachyodon, my instincts were screaming NO! :D The texture and the purely resupinate form just don't seem right to me! The person that help me also pointed out that S. pachyodon usually doesn't grow on wood that is this rotted. Posted 6 years ago
