  1. You're the first to share a photo of this specie, thanks so much! And welcome to JungleDragon, of course :) Posted 12 years ago
    1. Hi Ferdy, I hate to be critical, but I am pretty sure that this is not a Silver Gull (Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae) which has a narrow red bill. I think that belle weatherby made a mistake based on the confusion about common and latin names and English/German (what I know) or other languages. You see, the common large gull in Europe is the European Herring Gull (Larus argentatus). The latin name means "Silver Gull" in English and in fact, the bird is called the Silver Gull in German (and probably Dutch as you will know) - "Silbermöwe". So, do you want to correct it or can I do anything? Posted 8 years ago
      1. hi Barry, please don't see a species correction suggestion as being critical, it is exactly the behavior we encourage. Species identification is a group process where we correct and learn from each other. When you correct a species identification, all that is asked is to supply an explanation in the comments, which you did.

You should be able to do this yourself. In the species block, use the red remove button to unset the current specification. Then you can identify a new one. Let me know if it works.

  2. I changed the identification from Silver Gull, which it certainly is not, to California Gull. You can see in my reasoning above about why it is not the Australian Silver Gull (lack of a thin red bill), but although I thought initially that it might be a Herring Gull, due to the confusion of the name in different languages (see my comment above) when I look at it again, I notice the distinctive black/red marking on the bill which is characteristic for the California Gull and not the Herring Gull. Unfortunately there is no location, as that would settle it, but if anyone has a better idea I would be happy to hear it. Posted 8 years ago

The California gull is a medium-sized gull, smaller on average than the herring gull but larger on average than the ring-billed gull, though may overlap in size greatly with both.
