Oryzaephilus surinamensis - paler The other day, on a party some figs were passed around that someone had just brought to the Netherlands from Greece. After passing on the bowl, I saw this little spec on the table that proved to be a tiny beetle, so I retrieved the bowl and after some searching found another one :o)<br />

    1. Thanks Lisa - the size (a little under 3mm) wouldn't seem too bad, but with the narrow habitus it is still a really small beetle and quite hard to get the dof right over the whole of the animal - I had to toss out almost all shots I took *rolleyes* - but ones you het it right the "little black spec" turns into a intricate and coloured creature :o) Posted 6 years ago, modified 6 years ago
  3. Happy New Year! Be it full of health, happiness and many new insect spottings to share with us! :-) Posted 6 years ago
    1. Thanks Pato - sorry for the late reaction - have been swamped with other things. Of course all the best to you for the (rest of) the new year too! :o) Take care, Arp Posted 6 years ago

''Oryzaephilus surinamensis'', the sawtoothed grain beetle, is a beetle in the superfamily ''Cucujoidea''. It is a common, worldwide pest of grain and grain products as well as chocolate, drugs, and tobacco. The species's binomial name, meaning "rice-lover from Surinam," was coined by Carl Linnaeus, who received specimens of the beetle from Surinam.
