Dark-eyed Junco - Junco hyemalis

This bird was a bit shy and difficult to capture. It didn't like the sound of my camera shutter. But, I managed to get a shot on one of it's trips to forage on the ground.

  2. Ah, this bird will always have a place in my heart as it is the first bird I identified using a bird book (I knew Blue Jays and cardinals of course, but this one I had to look up). Posted 6 years ago

The dark-eyed junco is a species of junco, a group of small, grayish New World sparrows. This bird is common across much of temperate North America and in summer ranges far into the Arctic. It is a very variable species, much like the related fox sparrow, and its systematics are still not completely untangled.
